The (hormigas culonas / fat-bottomed ants) ants are a delicacy. Made right and they will have you hooked on your new favorite snack! They are a tradition in the department of Santander.
.
This little boy really worked to get these ants. Him and his mother get up early to wait for the ant to come out of their burrows in the ground in April. Then they are roasted and salted.
“These ants are only harvested during the rainy season. They are believed to be aphrodisiacs and are often given as wedding gifts. Production centres around San Gil and Barichara, Boyaca, but the ants are traded as far afield as Bogota and Bucaramanga and exported to Canada, England and Japan.”
